Nora returns to the home she walked away from 15 years earlier to face some of the people she walked away from. I decided to put this show in the round, enhancing the intimacy of the show and giving the audience the feeling of being trapped in an awkward situation similar to our heroine. I knew going into this play that the enemy of smart and wordy comedy is poor pacing so I made sure to really develop the characters' rhythms, cadences and patterns with each actor and pushed them to find the natural sarcasm and bite that many of the exchanges in this play require. This entire production from cast and crew was a total triumph. My creative team came through with elegant and subtle choices to convey a minimalist portrait of nineteenth century Norway, and my cast put their trust in me and committed one hundred percent to the vision of the piece.

This play was extremely important to the students in our department. Living in a very conservative part of the country, opportunities to tell LGBTQ+ stories and represent the queer community do not come very often. Aside from fight choreograpy and codes of conduct, we wanted to focus on the safety of students in being who they are, who they choose to love and how they identify no matter where they live, and that's one of the main themes of She Kills Monsters. We also wanted to make the fanstastical world of Dungeons and Dragons another character in the play which is why we made our set a giant collection of D&D books that formed an ampitheater for the play to take place in with a twenty sided die right in the center and also kept Chuck, the 'Dragon Master' of the game within the show, present throughout the whole play as if he were running the story from the table. The play was a hit with many people returning for each performance, some with signs and call outs reminiscent to a performance of The Rocky Horror Show.

When we decided I would direct Twelfth Night I knew I wanted to put it in the 1980s, a decade famous for its iconic movies, music, color palette and hijinks. I had a feeling the comedy that stemmed from the confusion of the twins' identities and the shenanigans of Toby Belch and his lot would could mirror the energy of the John Cusack and Andrew McCarthy era where the noble goofballs face off against the stuffy elite. We wanted this play to have a very ' on the surface' look to play up the camp, making the set almost 2D and cartoonish, while at the same time having the actors play the material earnestly. Most of the  cast had just taken my Shakespeare performance course the semester prior, so they were well equipped with the language. This one was a lot of fun and we got to sneak in a lot of 80's references and Easter eggs along the way for the benefit of this Shakespeare loving Millenial. This was also the first play we were able to perform inside and without masks since the beginning of the pandemic and that only heightened the enthusiasm and excitement of the cast, crew and audience alike.

In the spring of 2020 I had just started rehearsals for The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee when the world shut down due to the Covid pandemic. Like everywhere else in the world, we cancelled in-person classes, isolated in place, and unfortunately had to postpone our production. A year later, with the licensing rights already purchased by the department, we were tasked to somehow put on this musical with masked actors, masked audience and in an open air venue-which at the time were all stipulations that needed to be met in order for our students to be allowed to perform. After some casting changes based on previous cast members graduating or not returning during the pandemic, we had to figure out how to tell a story when you can't see your actors' faces as well as where we would perform this show. We figured out the "where" first. An unusual advantage to teaching at a southern university with an advanced agricultural program is that our campus has a rodeo arena, which while rooved, was built as an open air arena. So we decided to build a platform stage right in the middle of the dirt pit in the rodeo and built our set on that. The bigger curve ball I faced was the "how." I needed to make this show compelling, wholesome and funny without being able to see my students' faces. During callbacks, I came up with the idea of performing the show with Avenue-Q style puppets. I thought the sweet and slightly naughty nature of the show lent itself to humor that would and could be conveyed through puppetry. My design team, while wary, agreed and we committed to the idea. This decision was a major undertaking with the cast now having to learn a new skill in puppetry, but design wise, it was equally as daunting with our entire department having construction days to fabricate and costume all of our puppets from scratch.  It became a challenge that brought not only the cast but the entire theater department together to put on their first musical and first live performance since the pandemic started. So, I can proudly say I believe I am the only director to premiere a production of  The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee with full scale puppets, in a rodeo pit. The show must go on.
